Billund 1934

Time passed by.  But the toys didn’t sell as quickly as they had expected.  Ole thought perhaps the company needed a good name.

Ole:       What should it be?  It has to be a short word.  I want to convey “play well”
(In Danish, “play well” is called “LEG GODT”.  )  What should it be? What should it be?  If only I could get some sort of sign!  LEGO!

As you can see, Ole himself ended up finding a very suitable name, but what he didn’t know was that in Latin, the word “LEGO” means “I put together”
奥勒最后找到了一个非常合适的名字，但是他所不知道的是，“LEGO”一词在拉丁语中的意思就是“我拼装”。

The name “LEGO” was well received, and the company slowly started to move forward.

Godtfred:       We’ve made three thousand krones this year.  And we have more orders than usually.
哥特弗瑞德：今年我们赚了三千克朗，而且订单也比以往的多。
Ole:       Did you say three thousand krones?  And you need to see what I have been looking at.
奥勒：       你是说三千克朗吗？那你来瞧瞧我现在在看的东西吧。

Even though Godrfred wasn’t comfortable spending money on the milli machine??, he can see that it is useful and the quality of the toys improves.
尽管哥特弗瑞德不太愿意花那么多钱买木材加工机，但是他最终发现这个机器很有用，而且玩具的质量也得到了提高。

Ole:       Could you finish the last batch and get it ready for shipping?
奥勒：       你能做完这最后一批，然后把它们装箱出货吗？
Godrfred:       I will.  Dad! Dad! I saved a lot of money for the company today.

Ole:       Really?  How?

Godrfred:       I figure I can save money in the laquer.  So I only coated the ducks twice instead of three times.

Ole:       You what?!

Fortunately, Godtfred’s idea didn’t go well with Ole.  Ole made Godtfred unpack all the ducks himself, give them the last layer of laquer and bring them back to the train station.  Ole believed in high quality and not cheating his customers.  When Godtfred returned, Ole explained that it wasn’t a way to create a good brand.  This little lesson opened Godtfred ‘s eyes to the fact  that every detail matters, and only the best is good enough.
幸好，奥勒没有同意哥特弗瑞德的做法。奥勒让哥特弗瑞德自己一个人把打包好的鸭子重新拿出来，补刷上最后一道漆，再打好包送到火车站。奥勒相信质量至上，不能欺骗客户。当哥特弗瑞德回来后，奥勒教育他说，偷工减料绝对不是创品牌的做法。这个小教训让哥特弗瑞德明白了细节决定一切，只有做到最好才行。

In the late 1930s, LEGO was making a profit, even when the second world war broke out.  They tried to make best out of a difficult time.  It seemed nothing can go wrong.
三十年代时，乐高公司开始盈利，即使二战爆发也没能影响它。他们在困境中努力做到最好。看上去一切都没什么问题了。

第三段上菜：

Billund 1942

But a stormy night in 1942 changed their luck.
1942年的一个风雪之夜改变了他们的好运气。

Ole:       There is a fire !  The workshop is on fire!
奥勒：着火了！工作间着火了！

But when the firemen arrived, they were unable to save the workshop.  It burnt to the ground, and all the drawings and models were destroyed.  Ole was beginning to lose home.  All he had worked for was gone.  And he almost lost his company.  But being responsible for his children and workers inspired him to rebuild LEGO.
但是当消防员赶来时，已经无力回天了，工作间烧得精光，所有图纸和模型都毁了。奥勒几乎失去了一切：家，工作，公司（这段翻得不太好）。但是对孩子和工人的责任感激励着奥勒重建乐高。

A new factory was constructed.  Soon the production of wooden toys began.  The little company fought its way back to the market.  Gradually the LEGO factory began to run smoothly and Ole started looking for new challenges.  One day, he went to Copenhagen to look at a new machine just had arrived in Denmark.  It was a plastic moulding machine and Ole was very excited about it.
新的工厂建成了，木质玩具的生产也重新开始了，这家小小的公司重新杀回了市场。乐高工厂逐渐走上了正轨，而奥勒也在寻找新的挑战。一天，他到哥本哈根参观一个刚引进丹麦的机器。这是一个注塑机，奥勒对它很感兴趣。

When the plastic moulding machine finally arrived, Ole started making little plastic Teddy bears and rattles.  But he still has the plastic bricks he had received at the fair.  There was something about them that he couldn’t stop thinking about, and even though no one else could see the potential of them, Ole decided to redesign and put them to production.  But it was when LEGO first launch the great vergus of tracker??, the plastic toys became a success.  Unfortunately , the sales was dropping during the summer, and the company had too many toys in stock.
奥勒收到这个注塑机后，他开始用它制作小泰迪熊和小摇铃。但是他一直保留着展销会上收到的小塑料块，它似乎有一股魔力在吸引着奥勒。即使其他人都不觉得这个小塑料块有什么发展前途，奥勒还是决定重新设计并且投入生产。直到乐高发布了“拖车”玩具（？？不太确定），塑料玩具开始真正热门。但不幸的是，每到夏季，销售量就会大减，公司的库存开始堆积如山。

Godrfred:          This cannot be right! Of course our products can be sold the whole year, not only for Christmas!

Godtfred decided he would go out and sell the toys himself.  Godtfred brought his wife Edith as company and moral support.
哥特弗瑞德决定他自己去四处游走销售这些玩具。他带上了他的妻子伊迪斯作旅伴，同时也给他精神上的支持。

Edith:    Er, if you can pay cash, er, er, we need butter and eggs.

Well it wasn’t that bad.  Godtfred was a success in his trip around the country which help LEGO to get out from its financial crisis.  They reached home just in time for Ole’s birthday party.  Ole turned sixty and the whole family was gathered to celebrate with him.

Everyone thought that was a good idea, and we were placed on the sofa with all the presents and flowers around us.

On England Ferry 1954
1954年，在英国货轮上

On a business trip to English, Godtfred met a head of a big shopping center on his way home.  They discussed the toy industry.  The conversation would be very important to the future of LEGO.
在一次去英国的公务旅行中，哥特弗瑞德遇到了一个大型商店的主管，他们在一起谈论了玩具行业。这场对话对乐高的发展至关重要。

Businessman:  Damn this industry!  I just think toys are no good nowadays.

Godtfred:       What do you mean?  I think they are working very well.

Businessman:  Oh they work fine, sure.  But there is no system in anything!

Ole:          What in the world are you doing, Godtfred?

Godtfred:    There isn’t any system.  The toys need an idea and a system built around it.
I want to put system in the play.  And children have only been offered ready-made solutions, they need something different that would strengthen their imagination and creativity.
哥特弗瑞德：现在的玩具没有任何系统。玩具需要有一个理念，然后围绕这个理念形成一个系列，我想引进这个系统。我们一直只向孩子提供现成的玩具，他们需要一些与众不同的东西，来激发他们的想象力和创造力！
Ole:          So you are trying to put LEGO into a system?  Interesting.

That same year, LEGO started producing the first LEGO system of “Play”.  Children can now build houses with the LEGO bricks.  The Town Plan give “play” a realistic town setting.  And with this, children learn about traffic safety.  My sisters and I could play with the new LEGO system for hours.  Some people said we were the luckiest children in the world, because we grew up in a toy factory.

It was a huge breakthrough, and Godtfred decided to try selling it outside Denmark.  The system of “play” was so popular that they managed to sell it to many countries.

Kjeld:          Look what I have just built!

Even though LEGO was meant only for building houses, there were still a lot of opportunities.  There was just one problem.

Kjele:    I cannot lift it up.  It keeps falling apart.

That made Godrfred wonder.  He wanted to find a way to make LEGO brick to stick together.  But that was easier said than done.  Godrfred noticed that LEGO bricks got a better clench power when there are tubes inside.  Now it was no longer just bricks, but a whole construction system with endless possibilities.  This was ground breaking for the LEGO product.  With a child’s imagination, LEGO could be anything in the world, over and over again.  The imagination is the limit.

Unfortunately, Ole never got to see how successful the little brick actually became.  Godrfred was left on his own, and he had go through another fire at LEGO.  They destroyed most of the wood production.  Just like his father, Godtfred knew that he had to try to get out the best out of any situation and never give up.  Godtfred took the hard times with his head held high.  And sales grew and the company also got bigger.  He had to think ahead and he decided not to resume the production of wooden toys, and to only focus on the LEGO system.
不幸的是，奥勒没能看到这小小积木的极大成功。哥特弗瑞德现在只能独力支撑着乐高公司，还经历了另一场大火。这场大火烧毁了大部分的木质产品。就像他的父亲一样，哥特弗瑞德明白他必须从困境中走出一条生路，永不言败。哥特弗瑞德在他人生的低谷仍然一步一个脚印地工作着，渐渐地，销售增长了，公司逐渐壮大了。他对未来的发展做了一个规划，决定不再继续生产木质玩具，集全力开发乐高系列。

完结篇：

Billund 1961

It turned out to be a great decision.  Many new models were built and LEGO got stronger in the toy industry.
事实证明这是一个伟大的决定。乐高生产了很多新型号，在玩具行业中越来越强大。

Staff:       Sir, which one of these do you think is the best?
员工：    老板，你觉得哪个最好？
Godtfred:    En, that one.

Even though he got busier at LEGO, Godtfred still had bigger plans.  Now he wanted to build an airport so it would be easier to sell his toys to the whole world.  Like father, like son, it didn’t take long to put his idea into action.  Only three years later, Billund Airport was open.
即使哥特弗瑞德在公司里已经很忙碌了，但他心里还有个更大的计划。现在，他想要建造一座飞机场，让乐高玩具更便捷地走向全世界。有其父必有其子，哥特弗瑞德一旦有了想法就马上付诸行动。仅仅过了三年，Billund机场就建成了。

The many guests, in business connection, visited the company always wanted to see the modeling department.  Gradually, it got so crowded that it was hard for the employees to keep up their work.
商业来往中的很多客人在拜访乐高公司的时候都想看看模型车间。慢慢地，那个车间开始拥挤不堪，几乎连正常的工作都无法进行了。

Godtfred:    I think we better wait for a while.
哥特弗瑞德：我想我们最好还是等一会儿吧。

Godtfred can see something had to be done.  He needed a bigger place to display the LEGO models.
哥特弗瑞德觉得必须要改变这个状况，他需要一个更大的场地来陈列乐高模型。

Staff:    I don’t want to interrupt so I’ll just put this package of our new LEGO train on the table.

Godtfred:    Just put it there.  Train?

The idea grew quickly from an exhibition room to an amusement park.

Godrfred:       And then we can have a tower so you can look over the whole part from above, the whole town!  It would be a land made out of LEGO!  LEGO Land!

Guest:          Well, it looks interesting.  But how many visitors are you actually counting on?

Even though it sounded like a lot, my father was actually pretty far off the mark.  There were six hundred thousand guests the very first year.  My family and I were there to greet the guests.  We’ve kept up the tradition ever since.
这个数字听起来似乎很庞大，但事实上远比我父亲估计得要多得多。第一年，我们接待了6百万游客。我们全家都来到乐园欢迎游客，从那以后，这成了我们家的一项传统。

Now, you know how it all began.  LEGO wouldn’t be what it is today if it hadn’t be my grandfather’s sense of quality and search for perfection.  My father, firmly believed in the endless possibilities of the LEGO system.  I seek to take the LEGO idea even further.  It encourage children to explorer, to experience, and express their own world, a world without limits, and we are still convinced that only the best is good enough, because children deserve the best.

Put the system into these toys 把系统放到这些玩具里去 ... 多么伟大的理念！这也许是老外更容易成功的根源，因为他们更善于在不同的东西中找出潜在的关联，进而整合资源；可中国人更喜欢找不同点，搞特殊化。什么时候中国能有真正属于自己的品牌？
